Color Monitoring Research
Color is one of the main aspects of product development according to multiple industry sectors. The main purpose of this research was to identify patterns of color repetition and the verification of the connection between the colorful aspects – family, brightness and saturation – and the fashion seasons trends.
The color monitoring fulfilled the register of the fashion weeks in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo from 2013 to 2016. Therefore, it was accomplished a bibliographical study about trends and fashion research, in addition to a field survey for collection of sample. Due to its high power of information dissemination, the chosen instrument was the digital environment, using the internet.
To record the samples, we built color maps which were subsequently analyzed by means of visual and written records. In order to understand the repetition of colorful patterns over the period covered by the study, there were built comparative graphs categorized by family, brightness and saturation. Over 3000 color samples were collected and analyzed.
Following the written analysis for each season fashion weeks in the period of 4 years, we elaborated comparative graphs and mapped out the visual aspects variation throughout the years to search for possible patterns. Therefore it was possible to visually perceive and understand the variations and recurrences of a series of characteristics used by stylists in that time interval. For the predominance of color family, for example, it was found:
As a result of this monitoring, we were able to register some conclusions over the period observed.
1. As for the predominance, we observed a strong presence of red in both winter and summer.
2. In winter, the emphasis was given to neutral tones, with a strong tendency towards black.
3. The blue tones remained consistent in all seasons.
4. Greens and yellows alternate in terms of predominance, but always in small numbers.
5. The luminosity was predominantly high in the summer, however it was quite varied in the winter.
6. We observed a strong presence of colors with high saturation in all launches of the fashion weeks regardless of whether the season is cool or warm.
The research of the colors released each season during this period contributed to the register and analysis of the predominant colors as well as it can help professionals and companies in the sector; fashion teachers and students, to visualize how the color choices of the creators are repeated, becoming highlights of each season.
